Times turned hard for farmers everywhere during the Depression, and Vernon County was no exception. But even when it meant hiring around-the-clock guards to protect the building and property during the national farm strike, the Cooperative persevered and purchased the first cheese vats and presses in 1944. By 1952, the Cooperative was producing more than one million pounds of butter annually.

The Westby Creamery was not the only cooperative to set up in the area. Unlike Westby, however, the nearby Cashton and Coon Valley creameries did not survive.
