High Grove Farm Journal – July 2025
Aug 08, 2025 (Westby, WI)
It’s almost 7:30 p.m. on a warm, yet breezy, July evening on our Wisconsin dairy farm. The gentle rustling of our cows walking through the tall alfalfa, mingles with the relaxing sounds of their collar rings which quietly jingling as they move their heads back and forth, eagerly grabbing for the most tender bites before another cow next to them snatches it up first. The sounds of them munching on the grass fills the night air (always louder than one would imagine) just as the barn swallows glide over head chasing their supper too, and the sun sets on another full day of work on the farm.
Hello, and welcome! I am Jessica and I am so glad you stopped by to check out our farm journal. My husband Drew and I, along with our four children: Carter, Caleb, Laney and Tulsie, operate a dairy farm near Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin.

Every month we share what we’ve been up to on the farm and as you can see from the pictures above, we’re still haying a lot. But we’ve been up to other things too! The gardens have been productive and I’ve managed to keep up with it, either by freezing or canning it or us eating it fresh. The cucumbers, beans and zucchini have been the main crops so far but soon sweet corn will be ready – which we’re all excited about!

The gardens grow bigger each year as we try our hands at more things. And while we were kept busy with chores and crops and new life joining the farm, like this cute heifer calf, the timing of the gardens producing was perfect to fit in between all that work this month. Even with several things breaking down and the cows being extra slow and hard to move when the weather was in the 80’s, which made for extra long chores.

We’ve learned over the years there’s incredible value in knowing where our food comes from and how it’s grown. The dual benefit of healthy nutrition and peace in knowing how it’s grown, is something we’re proud to improve upon every day on our farm and the gardens. That’s something that we can share that with you too – through our cows milk!
Soon it will be harvest time when we chop all the corn we grew for the cows and bag it for silage to feed the cows for the fall, winter, spring and next summer. It’s always a big task and a great thing to check off for the year.
Drew took some time this month to clip some of the pastures and we’ve been doing fire wood this weekend. The wheel bearing went out in the skidsteer, so that will be his next project to fix. Meanwhile we’re moving right along grazing our rotation with the cows and getting ready to bring our heifers and dry cows home from summer pasture.
Thanks for stopping by! I’ll see you next month right here, or you can follow along weekly with us on the Creamery’s Facebook and Instagram!
