High Grove Farm Journal – May 2026

May is one of the busiest and most rewarding months on our grazing dairy farm. Hello! I am Jessica and I am so glad that you stopped by to see what has been happening on our farm in the last month! My husband, Drew, and I and our four children have enjoyed the change from early spring to it feeling like almost summer.
The landscape changed quickly, as it finally warmed up and everything turned green and began growing at full speed here in Wisconsin!
This spring has been especially meaningful as we continue our transition to organic farming, honing in new practices and making decisions that support the long-term health of our land, livestock, and family. The heifers and dry cows headed back out to pasture, eagerly stepping into tall fresh grass at their summer h. Watching cattle spread out across green fields never gets old and serves as a reminder of why we chose a grazing-based system.
Along with managing pasture rotations, May brought the rush of fieldwork. Between rain showers, we worked hard to get all of our corn planted and off to a strong start. The first crop of hay was also ready, keeping everyone busy mowing, raking, baling, and wrapping whenever weather conditions allowed. As always, timing was everything. Frequent rains helped pastures flourish and provided plenty of moisture for growing crops, but they also required patience as we waited for the right windows to get work done. Long days in the field were balanced with gratitude for healthy forage and promising growing conditions.
Beyond the farm fields, the garden was planted and beginning to take shape, adding another sign that summer is just around the corner. Rows of vegetables now sit alongside lush pastures and newly emerging crops, all benefiting from the spring rains. The kids are out of school and have already spent a ton of time swimming and doing many of the fun summer things we look forward to each year! As May comes to a close, warmer temperatures are settling in and the pace of summer is beginning to take hold. There is still plenty of work ahead, but the foundation for the growing season has been laid. The fields are green, the cattle are grazing, and the promise of summer is arriving with every longer day and rising temperature.
