High Grove Farm Journal – October 2025
Nov 10, 2025 (Westby, WI)
October on the farm carries a quiet kind of beauty — a season caught between golden harvest and the first breath of winter. Hello! Welcome to our farm, where the mornings arrive cool and misty these days. By noon the fields hum with the final efforts of harvest and tractors roll home with the last loads of silage and hay – the feed that will sustain the herd through the months ahead and the entire coming year.

The scent of fresh-chopped corn lingers in the air at our farm, mingling with the earthy smell of soil and cows. Frosty mornings seem to amplify both the colors and the smells of autumn, creating such a vibrant atmosphere on the farm. I want this season to last twice as long, but I know deep down it becomes just as beautiful as the first snow flurries descend upon us. The gardens have all been harvest but for some potatoes I’ll leave until the very last. The pantries are full, and it’s almost deer hunting time. Our yearly beef steer that we raise for feeding our hard-working family is getting close to butchering and will round out another year on the farm growing food for us and others. The farm produced wonderfully this year, crops and gardens alike, and we thank God for it.

Inside the barn, the rhythmic sound of milking echoes softly, steady and familiar against the hush of shorter days. We work daily with a sense of calm purpose at our list of fall tasks, including an upcoming yearly State Inspection for our Grade A license, our yearly fall white washing of the barn and all the chores that have to be completed before the world outside slowly fades into shades of amber and frost.
Thank you for visiting the farm today! Wishing you a bountiful harvest and a heart full of gratitude this fall. May your days be warm, your tables full, and your hearts joyful.
