Byom Organic Farm
Hi, I’m Seth Byom. I am a 6th generation farmer, and I own and operate Byom Farm just outside of Galesville, Wisconsin. I have been dairy farming my whole life. I grew up helping my dad whenever and wherever I could around his farm. Now, I farm just up the hill on what used to be my Aunt Judy and Uncle Dan’s farm. In 2018, when I was 20 years old, I purchased their cows and rented their farm. Then in 2022, I officially purchased the farm, which consists of 80 tillable acres and 76 acres of forest and creek bottoms.
With the help of my soon-to-be wife, Julia, and our trusty farm-hand Rooster the Australian Shepherd, we farm 76 acres of rented land and our own 80 acres. All of that combined feeds our 40 organic milking cows and all of our young stock.
We strive to care for the land and improve the soil health. All of our land is in the hills. My grandpa and Uncle Dan laid out contour strips when they purchased the farm. We also implemented large waterways to try to mitigate soil erosion. My uncle and my father help a lot on the farm – both with fieldwork and with the cows. It is true that farmers never truly retire.
Farming has never felt like a chore to me. Don’t get me wrong – it’s hard, relentless work – but I have always enjoyed time spent with the cows and keeping everything in order. I wouldn’t want to spend my days any other way.
